This week I began researching how to go about doing an automated inventory using the new KOHA system and a scanner. Not being familiar with scanners, the KOHA system and database, SQL reporting, cataloging, or even the process of conducting an inventory, I feel I have a major learning curve. But, I now have staff access to both KOHA and the WWCC network and so I spent a lot of time “exploring”.
I also had the pleasure of sitting in on an IL teaching session for one of the ENG 101 classes. Again, it was great to observe Quill in action. She uses a very hands-on, interactive approach to teaching, and the students responded very well. The session was designed to get the students familiar with library services and locating information. The students were divided into groups and given a task. Each group then reported their findings to the rest of the class. In a sense, they taught themselves. They took the assignment seriously and each group gave informative reports. I will definitely put what I learned about teaching into my own “data bank.”
