I spent a lot of time continuing to familiarize myself with the inventory tools this week, including “playing” with the scanner. With Janelle’s help, I learned a lot more about KOHA, the structure of the database, and the reporting tools. It is beginning to look like an inconsistent call number data format may prove to be a hindrance to completely automating the process. Also, there is question as to whether a special “inventory capable” scanner will be required.
After reading the KOHA documentation, I discovered that one recommended inventory method involves using the regular scanner to record a “Check-in” date for the inventory items and then to run the “Inventory/Stocktaking Report” for items with dates older than the “Check-in” date. While it sounds like a reasonable process, I discovered that the call number format issue might again pose a problem in terms of report usability. I will continue investigating and testing.
