This spring quarter DFW is my second opportunity to gain field experience. I am looking forward to contrasting public library work with my academic library experience at WWCC last quarter. I have a sense that the public library environment is very different from the community college library environment.
This week I was invited to attend the weekly librarian’s meeting. I received a warm welcome and they were quite prepared to put me to work. Together we pinned down my projects, tasks, and “work schedule” for the quarter. They would like me to work the reference desk three days per week (eight hours), to redesign the web-based registration form for the summer reading program, to put together one or more online tutorials using Camtasia software, and to attend the weekly librarian’s meeting (two hours). Their “wish list” of projects is much longer than I could possibly take on. I had to speak up and let them know that, based on my experience last quarter, there will probably be time for me to work on only two substantial projects in addition to the time I will be on site working the reference desk and attending staff meetings. I let them know that if the two projects go more quickly than expected, I will be glad to take on additional projects as time allows.
And so, here we go!
