Ah, the Media Inventory. The more I got into actually working the shelves, the more I realized that the call number sort issue was still more of a problem than what I thought. I finally resigned myself to the fact that I would have to work through the entire spreadsheet and manually cut and paste the remaining disordered numbers. It took several hours of work, but finally I had a usable report.
The process of checking the shelf items against the control list and then scanning the bar codes to update the “date last seen” field is fairly labor intensive. Per Darcy’s request, I familiarized Chris with the process I developed. Things definitely went more quickly with two sets of hands. However, his duties did not allow him to help me the entire time. It will be a long process for one person to inventory the entire Media collection.
After discussing the time issue with Darcy, at our weekly meeting on Friday, I came to find out that she did not intend for me to actually perform the inventory. Her goal was for me to just develop and document the process for performing the inventory. I told her that actually performing the inventory has been good for discovering the issues and problems. We agreed that I will stop after I complete the section of shelves I have been working with. After I finish documenting the process, this project will be complete.
In the meantime, I began working on the IL Inventory project. Quill asked me to begin with the Professional/Technical degrees. My initial findings indicate that these programs include very few IL components. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Agri Business and Wine Marketing degrees include several IL components. Unfortunately, I am finding it difficult to match up these general IL elements with our list of specific IL outcomes. I need to meet with Quill for clarification.
